Low-Carbon Salt Dome for National Highways at Strensham
One building, three jobs
National Highways came to Eurodome for a salt store beside the M5 at Strensham, but the brief was bigger than a straightforward barn. The building had to hold bulk rock salt, keep a separate compound of white salt for treated salt production, and make room for the brine-making plant and its tanks. Three functions the depot had always run separately, now wanted under one roof.
On top of that, the project set out to cut the carbon cost of the build. That ruled out the conventional steel-framed approach and pointed towards an engineered timber dome.
Eurodome's solution
We designed the dome around how the depot actually works, then built the structure and the groundworks to suit it as one package:
Extended the existing reinforced concrete slab to take the salt saturator and its associated tanks
Installed the dome structure over the working area
Built an integral white salt storage compound inside the main dome
Coordinated the structural layout around the specialist brine plant so everything fitted and stayed accessible
The result is a single operational building that holds bulk salt, keeps white salt separate, and houses brine production, instead of three separate arrangements spread across the site.
A dome that saves carbon
Morgan Sindall ran an embodied carbon assessment on the finished dome against an equivalent steel-framed building. The timber and concrete dome came out around 55% lower on embodied carbon, a saving of roughly 440 tonnes. For a public body with sustainability targets to hit, that is a number that stands up in a report, not just a nice-to-have.
The finished depot
Strensham now runs winter maintenance from one building that does the work of three: bulk salt, white salt and brine production, all beside one of the busiest stretches of the M5. It shows what a modern dome can do that a steel shed cannot, holding serious capacity while cutting the carbon cost of putting it up.
