An Elliptical Storage Dome for Bath & NE Somerset Council

Making the most of a tight plot

When Bath & North East Somerset Council built a new recycling facility, the storage dome had to fit into a constrained corner of a much bigger site, work in alongside several other contractors, and still hold as much material as possible. A standard circular dome would have wasted space in a plot that didn’t have any to spare.

Eurodome's solution

We designed a bespoke elliptical dome instead of a conventional round one, which changed how the building used the ground:

• Delivered a bespoke elliptical dome shaped to optimise storage in the available footprint

• Coordinated with the principal contractor and other trades throughout

• Planned and sequenced the works so interfaces with the surrounding infrastructure ran smoothly

• Kept close communication with the wider team to hold the programme

An ellipse gives you a more rectangular floor than a circle does, which is a better match for how a recycling site actually stacks and moves material. On a constrained plot, that shape is the difference between fitting and not fitting.

The finished dome

The elliptical dome slotted into the new recycling centre and gave the council high-capacity storage without eating into the rest of the site. Delivered in step with the wider construction programme, on a plot that a conventional dome would have struggled with.
