Salt and Grit Storage for Highway Authorities

When the temperature drops, the network has to keep moving, and that depends on having dry, ready-to-spread salt exactly where your gritters need it.

Salt left uncovered cakes, clumps and washes away, and unprotected stockpiles can lose up to a fifth of their volume in a single year. A proper storage building keeps your de-icing stock dry and usable all winter, protects a serious asset, and lets crews load up and get back out on the road fast.

Eurodome has built salt and grit stores for highway authorities and councils across the UK for decades, from single-depot barns to 22,000-tonne strategic stores. Our dome timber barns, fabric buildings and sliding roofs are engineered for the harsh, corrosive salt environment, with the clear span and access your loading shovels and gritters need.

Trusted through every winter

Eurodome designs, manufactures and installs salt and grit stores across the UK and Ireland, with a team that brings decades of combined engineering experience. From our base in Stirling, we've delivered more than 180 structures, many of them for highway authorities and councils including Highways England and Transport Scotland.

We handle every stage in-house: design, engineering, planning support, manufacture, groundworks and installation. One accountable team takes your project from first enquiry to handover, with no gaps between separate contractors.

And we hold the accreditations that matter for public-sector procurement: CHAS, Constructionline Gold and IPAF, backed by ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 for quality and environmental management. It's the kind of track record that gets us through framework tenders and onto depot sites.

Whatever your depot needs, we build for it

Whatever your depot needs, we can build the right store for it.

Strategic salt stores

Large-capacity dome barns for regional resilience stock, holding anything up to 22,000 tonnes of rock salt dry and ready for the season ahead.

Depot salt barns

Right-sized stores for local and district depots, keeping each team's salt close to the network and quick to load onto the gritters.

Grit, sand & aggregate storage

Covered bays for grit, sand and de-icing aggregate, keeping materials dry, separated and free from caking and clumping right through the winter.

Sliding roofs & canopies

Space-saving sliding roofs and container canopies for smaller salt stocks or tight depot yards, giving quick, easy access for loading whatever the space.

The benefits of a Eurodome salt store

A purpose-built salt store isn't just cover, it's protecting a critical asset and your winter resilience. A Eurodome building keeps salt dry, loads fast and stands up to the corrosive environment for decades. Here's what that means in practice.

Salt stores up close

From strategic domes to depot barns, take a look at the salt and grit stores we've designed and built. Every one is engineered to its site and its winter workload.

Salt storage buildings designed, manufactured & installed

Every Eurodome salt store is engineered to last and built around your depot. From the timber and steel in the frame to the cover on top, the same team designs, manufactures and installs it, so nothing is left to chance. Here are the features that go into it.

Built for the salt environment

Salt attacks steel, so we build for it. Our dome timber barns have no steel frame to corrode, and where we do use steel it is hot-dip galvanised after welding and coating, three times thicker and ten times harder than inline galvanising. Either way, your store keeps its strength in the harshest conditions.

Long-lasting protection

Our structures are built to last decades in service. Timber domes need little more than the occasional check, and our fabric covers carry warranties of up to 25 years and can be re-sheeted at end of life rather than replaced. Many of our barns are still hard at work long after they went up.

Our clear-span design puts no columns in the way, from 7.3m up to 64m wide and, on the domes, diameters up to 50m. That gives loading shovels the full floor to work, tip and turn, with the height to build a proper stockpile and load the gritters without obstruction, even at full stock.

Column-free interiors

Accredited and certified

Eurodome holds the accreditations that count for public-sector work: CHAS, Constructionline Gold and IPAF for safety and procurement, plus ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 for quality and environmental management. It's clear proof every store is built to recognised standards.

Access built for loading

Access is designed around how your depot loads and unloads. Choose wide openings, roll shutter doors and the entry points your loading shovels and gritters need, so salt goes in easily and comes out fast when the forecast turns and the network needs treating in a hurry.

Custom sizing and capacity

No two depots are the same, so we size every store around your stock and your site. Capacity, height, span and access are all designed around the tonnage you hold and the way your team works, from a single local depot barn to a regional strategic store holding tens of thousands of tonnes.

Who we work with

Eurodome builds for the organisations that keep the country moving: Highways England, Transport Scotland, Amey, Ringway Jacobs, Conway, Carnell, Kier and Balfour Beatty, alongside county and unitary councils from Essex and Lincolnshire to Kent, Surrey and the Isle of Wight. When winter resilience matters, they build with us.

Let's talk about your winter storage
